We hope everyone has some time to join us this Wednesday, Mar. 31st, for our next Bakersfield Jazz Workshop at Le Corusse Rouge.
This week, Kelulu will be returning to the BJW for their second appearance as our Featured Artist. Consisting of Jorge Urbina (guitar/latin percussion), Noel Hernandez (Guitar/vocals/auxiliary), Armando Arambula (bass/keyboards), Alex Lopez (latin percussion/turntables), and Jay Smith (piano/keys/synth), their name comes from a legendary and mysterious figure from Latin American and Spanish folklore. Their sound is a blend of Latin Jazz, Flamenco, Bembe, Afro-Cuban and Puerto Rican Son, Huapango, and eclectic genres of modern Rock. Please join us in welcoming this new band back to the BJW community!
Remember, our new workshop format is:
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM - Beginning Jazz Improv Class 7:30 PM - 8:30 PM - Featured Artist 8:30 PM - 11:00 PM - Open Jam Session
Be sure to bring your own Fake / Real book, charts in your own keys, and music stand if you want to participate the jam session. We now have a jam session sign up sheet at the front desk if you want to participate. Just let us know your instrument (or that you are a vocalist) and what tune(s) you want to play.

NEWS
We have two new items to report. First, as you may have noticed above, we are extending our Open Jam Session to 11 PM, provided that there are still enough musicians present who want to play. This should give everyone an opportunity to get their licks in.
Secondly, thanks to the financial and volunteer support provided by you and others, the Board of the BJW is very pleased to announce The Clinicians Series 2010, a series of five jazz clinics at Le Corusse Rouge. Beginning next month, instead of our regular workshop, a world class jazz musician will present a clinic followed by a performance in which he/she will be accompanied by some of Bakersfield's finest jazz musicians. The clinics (and the performances) will be presented free of charge to the general public and open to all ages!
The series kicks off on April 7th with drummer Dave Tull, who has also been the vocalist for Chuck Mangione for the last several years. Additionally, Mr. Tull will be performing with four local jazz musicians: Paul Perez (sax), Steve Eisen (trumpet), Glen Fong (bass), and Ezekiel Victor (piano). Note: we have revised the clinic schedule by one/half an hour - all clinics will be now starting at 7 PM (our regular workshop schedule will remain the same as shown above).
The remaining clinicians are:
Jun. 9 - Carl Saunders (trumpet)
Aug. 18 - Clayton Cameron (drums) - The Brush Master!
Oct. 13 - Henry Franklin (bass) / Theo Saunders (piano)
Nov. 10 - Barbara Morrison (vocals)
All of the above musicians have played and/or recorded with some of the greatest legends in jazz history! Music teachers, students, parents, musicians, jazz fans - please get out the word to all you know about this series of fantastic clinics, brought to you by the Bakersfield Jazz Workshop. We think this will be an unprecedented opportunity for the Bakersfield area to learn from the jazz masters. We hope you can clear your schedules and find the time to attend. For more information, please refer to the attached flyer and bio summary.
VIDEOS, VIDEOS, VIDEOS!!!

DONATIONS
Just a reminder to you all. The BJW is a non-profit 501c corporation staffed entirely by volunteers. No one who helps run our normal, weekly workshops, including the performers, gets paid. To help us with our expenses, the purchase of equipment, to provide free clinics, and scholarships, we depend upon your donations. We sure would appreciate it if you can make a small donation to our tip jar before you leave the workshop. (Your donation may be tax deductible - check with your tax advisor.)
Additionally, you may want to check with your employer to see if they have a Corporate program to support the arts and if they might be interested in becoming a BJW sponsor. Chevron Corporation is a corporate sponsor and, in addition, some of its employees have made individual donations to the BJW that were also matched by Chevron.
We have big plans for programs and activities for the workshop, but, we need funding to get them off the ground! Please help!
VOLUNTEERS
NOTE!!!!!!: We are always looking for new volunteers. If you have the time, energy, and willingness, let us know - we'll find something for you to do and you can then tell your friends how you get to hang out with all of these cool jazz musicians! We are particularly looking for volunteers who would like to help with our weekly workshop (set-up/break down, front desk, and jam sessions), and our newsletters. In fact, we have an immediate need for someone to help out with the newsletters. If you are interested in volunteering and like to write, here's a chance for you! Just check with Frank or Steve or reply to this e-mail. Thanks for all of your support!
